Our friend Freddy loves to forge. He makes metal parts and tools.

And when he goes to work, he must follow all the rules.

He clocks in on time and is ready to forge some more...

But wait! Freddy must make sure he is safe before he gets on the shop floor.

A hard hat will protect his head from danger up high.

And he wears safety glasses so nothing gets in his eyes.

A pair of gloves to protect his arms and hands from cuts and heat.

And boots with steel toes to shield his feet.

Earplugs care for his hearing and quiet the sounds.

Like the press when it smashes or hammer when it pounds.

Freddy and his friends know practicing safety is smart.

Good job Freddy! Now the forging fun can start.

My Forging Glossary Safety from head to toe…

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as “PPE”, is equipment worn to protect workers from hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. Hard Hat: Hard hats are required when working in areas where there is a potential for injury to the head from falling objects. In addition, some hard hats designed to reduce electrical shock are required when working near exposed electrical conductors that may contact the head. Safety Glasses: Safety glasses protect the eyes from the dangers of a variety of airborne hazards. Safety goggles prevent chemicals from splashing into the eyes, flying debris from damaging the retina, bright light from impairing vision and smoke from burning eyes. This important piece of equipment safeguards eyes when working in potentially dangerous environments.

Earplugs: Earplugs are a type of hearing protection often used in manufacturing environments. Hearing protectors are required to prevent noise induced hearing loss. These hearing protection devices reduce the noise energy reaching and causing damage to the inner ear. Gloves: Designed to protect a worker’s hands and arms from various hazards, safety work gloves may protect against chemical exposure, cuts, abrasions, burns, punctures, electrical risks, and other dangers on the job. Steel-toe boots: A steel-toed boot is a type of footwear that features a protective steel insert in the toe area. These boots can prevent a wide range of foot injuries. These types of boots are especially useful for workers exposed to potential danger on the job, such as factory workers like those who work at forging plants or steel mills.

This book was written to share the importance of safety in forging and manufacturing. Come along with Freddy the forger as he puts on his personal protective equipment and gets ready for his day at work.
