EQUIPMENT & TECHNOLOGY

Avoiding Heat Losses To ensure thermal efficiencies across the installation, the company used the Nutec HPS grade (12 lb/ft3/192 kg/m3 density) ceramic fiber system. HPS is composed of long, flexible, and interwoven fibers manufactured by the spun process, yielding a strong, lightweight, and durable product. It can be used continuously up to around 2,150°F (1,175°C), well above the ratings of both the austenitizing and tempering furnaces on this plant. The bases of the furnaces are covered with a combination of dense and insulating firebricks. Overall, the combustion system is proportionally controlled for both these furnaces. Additionally, the tempering furnace has the option of using the fuel-only control system. The burners in both furnaces are high velocity nozzle-mix burners designed to fire an intense stream of hot gases through a combustor using ambient combustion air. The high velocity of the gases improves temperature uniformity, product quality, and system efficiency. ■
