THE IMPORTANCE OF A MENTAL HEALTH FOCUS IN THE FORGING
INDUSTRY By Angela Gibian
O ne study by the Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epide miology says employees working in the manufacturing industry have more mental health problems than the national average - 36% more [1]. In the fast-paced and often physically demanding world of the forging industry, and manufacturing in general, the significance of mental health can sometimes be overshadowed by the focus on operational efficiency, safety, and quality control. However, ignoring the mental well-being of employees in a manufacturing business can have consequences for both the individuals and the organization.
that prioritizes mental health, businesses can significantly reduce the risk of workplace injuries. Employees who are emotionally stable are more likely to follow safety protocols, be aware of potential hazards, and make rational decisions in high-pressure situations, ultimately contributing to a safer working environment. Lower Turnover Rates The American Institute of Stress states that job stress costs U.S. businesses over $300 billion annually due to increased absenteeism, turnover, and decreased productivity [5]. Companies invest significant time and resources in hiring and training employees. High employee turnover rates can be a financial burden on a business. When mental health is neglected, employees are more likely to become dissatisfied with their jobs, leading to higher turnover rates. On the other hand, organizations that promote mental health support and provide resources for their employees are likely to see reduced turnover rates. A mentally healthy workforce is more likely to stay with the company long-term, which can result in cost savings and increased continuity in operations. Improved Team Dynamics

A positive mental state can boost employees' motivation and engagement levels, resulting in increased output and improved performance. When employees are mentally well, they are more likely to maintain focus, make fewer errors, and exhibit a higher level of commitment to their work. In contrast, individuals struggling with mental health issues may experience reduced concen tration, absenteeism, and decreased overall productivity, which can lead to delays and operational disruptions. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy an estimated $1 tril
Teamwork is crucial in manufacturing, as it often involves various departments working together to achieve common goals. Mental health issues can strain team dynamics by causing interpersonal conflicts, communication breakdowns, and reduced collaboration. Prioritizing mental health can help foster positive team dynamics. When employees feel supported and respected, they are more likely to work cohesively, share ideas, and contribute positively to team efforts. This, in turn, leads to better problem-solving, increased inno vation, and a stronger sense of unity within the organization.

Safety is a paramount concern in an industry like forging, and the mental well-being of employees is closely tied to workplace safety. Workers who are stressed, anxious, or distracted are more prone to making errors that can lead to accidents. By creating a culture
