10 QUESTIONS FORGERS SHOULD ASK THEIR EQUIPMENT SUPPLIERS By Angela Gibian

I nvesting in forging equipment is rarely a simple purchase. Whether a company is adding automation, replacing aging equipment, improving uptime, increasing capacity, reducing energy costs, or modernizing controls, the supplier relationship matters long after the purchase order is signed. The right equipment supplier is not just a vendor. They are a technical partner, a problem-solver, and often a key contributor to long-term safety, productivity, quality, energy efficiency, and profitability. Before making a major equipment decision, here are 10 questions every forging company should ask. 1. How do you support safety and regulatory compliance? Safety is central to forging operations. Equipment suppliers should be prepared to discuss guarding, lockout/tagout, controls, emergency stops, pinch points, operator positioning, heat exposure, ergonomics, and applicable standards. Forgers should ask how safety is addressed in the equipment design and installation process. A strong supplier should be able to explain not only what safety features are included, but also how those features fit the way the equipment will actually be used on the shop floor. Safety conversations should also include maintenance access, troubleshooting procedures, and startup support. Equipment that is safe in theory still needs to be safe when operators, maintenance personnel, and supervisors are working around it under real production conditions. Ask: What safety features are built into the system, and how do they align with our plant safety requirements? 2. How well do you understand forging-specific operating conditions? Forging is not a clean, gentle, low-impact environment. Equipment must perform under heat, scale, vibration, shock loading, heavy parts, tight production windows, and demanding quality expectations. Forgers should ask whether the supplier has direct experience with forging operations, not just general manufacturing or metalworking. A supplier who understands the realities of forging will be better prepared to recommend equipment that can withstand the environment, integrate with existing processes, and support long-term reliability. It is also important to ask for examples. Has the supplier worked with similar part sizes, materials, temperatures, press or hammer configurations, handling systems, or production volumes? The more closely their experience matches the operation, the more valuable their recommendations will be. Ask: What forging applications have you supported, and can you share examples similar to our operation?

3. Is this a mature technology, and can it grow with our operation? New technology can bring major benefits, but forgers should understand whether the equipment is proven, emerging, or still being refined. As David Lee of Weld Mold Company noted, buyers should ask whether the technology is mature enough to function seamlessly because the bugs have already been worked out. That does not mean forgers should avoid innovation. It means they should understand the risk profile. Is the equipment a standard model with a strong track record? Is it a customized system? Has it been used in forging environments before? What problems have been identified in earlier installations, and how have they been resolved? Forgers should also look beyond the initial purchase. Will the system be expandable or updateable? Can controls, sensors, automation, data collection, or safety features be upgraded later? Equipment that cannot adapt may become a limitation as the company grows or customer requirements change. Ask: Is this technology proven in forging environments, and what options exist for future upgrades, expansion, or software updates? 4. How will this equipment improve productivity, uptime, or throughput? A new piece of equipment should solve a real business problem. That may mean reducing downtime, increasing production speed, improving consistency, reducing labor intensity, enhancing safety, lowering scrap, improving energy efficiency, or expanding the range of parts a company can produce. Forgers should ask suppliers to clearly explain the operational impact of the equipment, not just its technical specifications. The best suppliers can help quantify expected improvements and identify where the greatest return may come from. This discussion should include both best-case expectations and realistic operating assumptions. For example, what throughput can be expected during normal production? What are the limits? How does the equipment perform during shift changes, tool changes, part changeovers, or periods of interrupted flow? Ask: What measurable improvements should we expect, and how have other customers achieved those results? 5. What are the maintenance requirements and expected service life? Forging equipment is a long-term investment. The purchase price is only one part of the total cost. Maintenance, spare parts, inspections, rebuilds, downtime, and service support all affect the true value of the equipment over time. Forgers should ask for realistic maintenance requirements,
