Member Spotlight: McKees Rocks Forgings McKees Rocks Forgings (MRF), headquartered in McKees Rocks, Pa., 10 minutes east of Pittsburgh, prides itself on meeting its customers’ needs, with no minimum quantities required. The company produces a wide range of high-quality products for various industrial markets, including crane, industrial and sheave wheels, gear blanks, forged steel wheels of various contours, forged rollers for mining applications and other circular forgings. The company can complete all forged products in-house, including the forging process itself, machining and most heat treatments, offering a one-stop-shop for their customers. MRF utilizes a 100-year-old 10,000-ton, four-column hydraulic press for net forging products. The power of the water-fed hydraulic press, combined with closed-die tooling design, allows McKees Rocks Forgings to achieve the reduction ratios that are critical to high-quality forgings. Their forgings range from 10-52 in. in diameter, 3-26 in. thick and 300-5,000 pounds in most any steel grade requested. The company offers several line cards of standard products for cranes as well as sheave and industrial wheels. These items are forge-ready to help meet tight production deadlines. In addition to standard offerings, the company keeps various additional forged

sections for rollers and gearing on hand so it can minimize the need for new tooling and improve lead times. Having been in operation continuously since the 1980s, MRF has amassed an extensive selection of tooling to meet various forging geometries. Their collection of forging dies and insert plates allows for flexible use of their tooling and the ability to process multiple sections during a forging run. The engineering team at MRF drafts and estimates all incoming requests for quote to achieve the best possible material utilization. If material yield is less than desired, the engineering team will design new tooling in SolidWorks, simulate the forging process in Quantor Form and cost new tooling as effectively as possible for their customers. At the time of estimation, the team estimates and includes all incurred costs in its quote. MRF will never add any surcharges after a quote has been issued unless the part gets revised by the customer. In addition, the company carries various certifications for quality control, including ISO 9001:2015, ABS and BV. Their in-house inspection team will inspect customers’ outgoing product to the thousandth of an inch to ensure dimensional accuracy to the customer’s print.Their other non-destructive testing capabilities also

include hardness measuring, magnetic particle inspection, handheld ultrasonic and automated immersion ultra sonic inspections. McKees Rocks Forgings continues to modernize and expand their production capabilities, looking to tackle the needs of new and emerging markets.
