She started in the grinding room, but she has also worked as a roller helper on the hot mill and cold mills, as well as doing processing as needed. Gloria has been with Universal Stainless for over 27 years. Gloria got into the industry because she needed a job. She bugged the company to hire her for 18 months. When she was hired

Celine currently works in Customer Service at Universal Stainless. She has been employed with them for 18 years. Her career in the industry was “fate.” A temp agency sent her to help in the office. After completing what they needed done she asked what else she could do, and they have been giving her things to do ever since. Her advice for those women coming into careers in this industry

in 1984, they were bringing on groups of people every two weeks to fill the shortage of employees. "The guys told you what to do once. You did it or figured out how to do it. Once you proved yourself you were in," said Gloria. Her advice for women looking to build careers in manufacturing is “Come to work and do your job. Susan is a Steel Inspector, and she has been with Universal Stainless for 18 years. Her father worked for Universal Stainless for 40 years, and she thought – “it worked for him, why not her?” Her advice for women looking to build careers in the industry is to “have confidence in your work. If you can’t do the job – don’t.” Ashia Fielding works in the warehouse (shipping) at Universal Stainless. She started as a skiver/ belter. She has been with the company for about 18 months. Previously she was working as a cook and wanted a better paying job. This filled that need. Her advice to other women coming into the industry is “don’t be intimidated by the steel, or the guys around you.”

Da’Lynn is a Remelt Utility at Universal Stainless’ Bridgeville location. She has just joined the team less than a week prior to this interview. Da’Lynn loves welding and doing hands-on work. Labor is her type of work. She gives this advice to women looking for careers in manufacturing, “Come in with a steady mind. Don’t think there is anything you can’t do.”
