INDUSTRY NEWS

In the words of Benjamin Franklin: “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” With its failure analysis courses, the Forging Industry Association is making it easy for its members to get involved and learn. If you have questions about Forging University and its offerings, please contact Lorean Crowder at lorean@forging.org or call 216 781-6260.

This is followed by mapping the typical steps taken in evaluating a forging problem.

Next, there is a quick tutorial of the Nondestructive Testing (NDT) techniques including visual inspection, ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MP), and liquid penetrant testing (LP) which are often how a forging problem is first discovered. After the NDT techniques, there is a review of the basic techniques and equipment used in failure analyses. (Note: these are explained more in-depth in the “Failure Analysis of Metal Problems”). At that point in the course, the student is armed with the tools and techniques, and the content dives into the examples which apply the tools and techniques. The examples include: • Closed Die: a crack in a stainless steel flange • Open Die: a forging burst in a large alloy steel cylinder • Rolled Ring: a forging lap in a carbon steel ring The Forging Industry Association recognizes that providing a wide range of high-quality training courses is one of its top services to its members. FIA staff regularly reviews its training offerings and find ways to improve and keep them fresh. This is evidenced by the 70 training courses in their library, the addition of the general metals failure analysis course to that library, and the latest addition of forging specific supplements with case studies.

Forging University is an eLearning platform provided by FIA. It is available free of charge for FIA Members, government (.gov email) officials, military (.mil email) members, and professors and students (.edu email). Nonmembers can purchase access to training courses for a fee.
