T he Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation (FIERF) will host its Third Annual Forging Competition. During this annual competition, teams of students have the chance to compete by forging a specific item determined each year. Teams compete to win prizes and are judged based on their final forged product. This hands-on learning experience allows students to explore the world of forging! This year, teams have been assigned the task of forging a black smithing hammer of their choice. Each hammer must be made of 1045 carbon steel and the weight of the hammer cannot exceed 3.5 pounds. Teams are encouraged to partner with an industry representative to help guide the team and answer questions they may have. This also allows the students to connect and network with forging industry members during the process. The competition will be held at Forge Fair, North America’s largest tradeshow event dedicated exclusively to the forging industry, on May 15, 2025. Teams will be judged on four different categories: 1.) Best Performance Based on Testing & Expert Evaluation: Each hammer will be put through a series of tests, testing the hammer’s strength and durability. This award will be deter mined by judges from the show “Forged in Fire.” 2.) The Best Process: The team who implements the best overall process throughout the execution of their project. This award will be determined by FIA’s Technical Committee from reviewing and ranking each team’s technical report.
