Empowering Women and Allies: Strategies to Overcome Unconscious Bias By Mindy Toth

In forging, like many sectors in the manufacturing industry, unconscious bias remains a significant hurdle, creating challenges that can hinder growth and opportunities for women. Unconscious bias refers to attitudes or stereotypes that unconsciously influence our perceptions, actions, and decisions. They can manifest in subtle, unintentional ways, such as: Overlooking a woman’s idea in a meeting, assuming certain roles are better suited for men, or even just asking a female rather than a male employee to take notes or pick up a cake. For women in the forging industry, navigating unconscious bias can be challenging. However, armed with awareness and strategic approaches, women, alongside supportive male allies, can dismantle the barrier of unconscious bias and create a workplace where talent and merit are recognized above all else. Strategies for Women

• Promote Visibility: Volunteer for high-visibility projects and roles. The more visible you are within your organization, the more recognition and opportunities you are likely to receive. • Address Unconscious Bias Directly: If you encounter unconscious bias, address it directly and professionally. A respectful conversation can create awareness and promote change. • Stay Resilient: Persistence and resilience are key. Even if you encounter challenges, continue to pursue your goals. Understand that setbacks are a part of any journey, but your determination can help you overcome them. Strategies for Men as Allies

• Cultivate Assertiveness and Confidence: Speak up in meetings, share ideas, and assert yourself. Stand firm in your convictions and let your contributions speak for themselves. Believe in your skills and expertise. Confidence in your abilities will not only help you combat self-doubt but also challenge the biases of others. Your confidence can be contagious and influence how others perceive you. • Advocate for Yourself: If you feel that your contributions are being overlooked, tactfully bring attention to your achievements. Make sure your hard work and dedication are acknowledged.

• Educate Yourself and Others: Take the opportunity to educate yourself and colleagues about unconscious bias and the challenges faced by women in forging. Awareness is the first step in being an effective ally and can lead to a more supportive environment where unconscious bias is challenged and extinguished. • Amplify Their Voices: Act as a megaphone for women's ideas and contributions. In meetings, make a conscious effort to credit women for their ideas and ensure their voices are heard. Help amplify their achievements within and outside the organization.
